[NEWS AND VIEWS] « A classic "yes, but" press release, | Home | Looking for the good in bad news. » December 09, 2003Pulp nonfiction. Despite being regarded as a green and eco-friendly country, we are outraged to report that the Swiss have utterly neglected their duties in one respect. In half a day (before things even start properly) the summit has gone through a fair-sized rain forest in hand-outs, press releases etc, and we've seen just one person collecting paper for recycling in a place big enough for 13,000 participants. Plus there appear to be no recycling bins for public use and the staff don't have a clue about how you would go about it. Despite this summit being about the future of cyberspace, the vast majority of those here seem to prefer hardcopy. Why? Erin Dean @ December 9, 2003 07:33 PM
Why, you ask? It's simple. Most people don't use their laptops in the bathroom... and I think it *is* that simple.
But on the flip side, the people there aren't from the cybergeneration, for the most part. They like the feel of a pen in their hands, a piece of paper... a clipboard... Give them a laptop and they play solitaire. ;) Taran @ December 9, 2003 07:56 PM
We have a representative attending the summit from our organization, Conservation International, http://www.conservation.org . Her name is Kate Hughes. If you manage to track her down, I think she would have some interesting comments regarding the recycling and other environmental issues not being addressed at the summit.

Could you give any indication (aside from the blog) as to what methods of digital technology are being used to enhance communication at the Summit?

I'm going ask around to see if someone can give us some answers about recycling at this paper-laden summit (at least see if we can get some recycling bins!). I'll let you know what I find out. :-)
Kate Hughes @ December 10, 2003 05:46 PM
I checked around today-- no one could really give me any good answers... said that they are too busy to talk about it. Also, that I needed to understand that this is "French Switzerland" and people don't recycle here. In addition, I was told that there are some security concerns about it. Hmmm, with all of the security present, standing around at the check points, I don't know how this is possible....
