Comments: The Independent's Geoffrey Lean

In an Earth Times article - http://www.earthtimes.org/sep/johannesburgsummitpowellsep04_02.htm - a more positive evaluation of WSSD is given. The idea that more will come of the action partnerships formed at WSSD than has come from the airy promises made at RIO is widespread, but this article goes further and sees Powell's outline of a new vision of sustainable development that emphasizes good governance, respect for human rights, rule of law and trade as being a paradigm change from the antiquated ideas and language of the disappointed NGOs.

Time will tell if things are improving but even for the present it seems worth making a distinction between the sour grapes of the NGOs about their loss of status, and the prospects for sustainable development and poverty reduction. Lean seems desperate to defend his unproductive career and Schroder, mentioned in the article, is fighting to save his career too. It's revealing that they value their careers above all else and are willing to cynically use the misery of others to advance themselves.

Thanks for the reference - I'll refer to it in the main blog today. Generally, I'll be scooping up reaction for the rest of the week.

A hero, eh? Against genetic engineering in Africa, eh?

I guess that means no recombinent human insulin for Africa's diabetics, eh?

And if a killer of sick people like Tewolde is the hero of this festival of lunacy (as Tim Blair called it and www.dailysummit.net seems to demonstrate that it was), then I shudder to imagine the Moral Monster Quotient of the average delegate.
