Comments: The UK correspondents are wreathed in smiles

I sense that "back-sliding" could become a buzz word for the foreseeable future! It suggests that a target hasn't being met due to someone being distracted rather than through outright malice - which may be a fairish assessment of the situation. Tony Blair certainly has the potential to bridge the growing divide between the EU and US and there can be little doubt that what he will play a crucial role in the success or failure of the summit as a whole. It may be good that he has kept out of the limelight, and thus his political powder dry, ever since agreeing to attend the summit. This leaves him with the maximum possible room for maneouvre - something that more widely-known positions would have made tricky. He didn't get where he is today without being an astute and sophisticated politician... although we don't know yet quite how astute he will turn out to be.

well according to this article http://www.spectator.co.uk/article.php3?table=old§ion=current&issue=2002-08-31&id=2199
(via Instapundit). Dubya doesn't "give a shit what the Europeans think."
Based on that and the other signs (i.e. Airbase in Qatar, approval of sale of military equipment to Kuwait), he's getting ready to invade Iraq.

The World Summit should focus on development without corruption. It should adhere to the principle 'think globally-act locally'. No finaciial support from developed countries can resolve the issues of health. education. drinking water, poverty elimination and biodiversity protectionunless the political systems in the developing countries are corrupted. So nonassitance to corrupted countries should be the first item of recommendations for sustainable development of the Johansburg meet.
